Transfer a domain from Squarespace to an offshore registrar

Squarespace now holds most former Google Domains names. Its code arrives by email, and every new request voids the last one.

Quick answer

How do I transfer a domain from Squarespace?

To transfer a domain from Squarespace, switch Domain Lock off at account.squarespace.com/domains and click Request transfer code. As of October 2026, the code arrives by email within 24 hours, and only the latest one works. Paste it into TransferOffshore. Squarespace then has 5 days to reject; the whole move can take up to 15 days.

Squarespace steps, from lock to email

  1. Open your domain list

Go to account.squarespace.com/domains and click the domain.

  2. Switch Domain Lock off

Turn "Domain Lock" off. A "Can't unlock domain" message means a lock period is still running.

  3. Save DNS, drop DNSSEC

Write down every DNS record and remove DNSSEC. Edits are frozen once the transfer runs.

  4. Request the code

Click "Request transfer code", confirm with your password or 2FA, then "Continue" and "Ok".

  5. Use the newest email only

Look for "Auth code for [domain]" from [email protected]. A new request makes a new code and voids the earlier one.

Who is the registrar of record of my Squarespace domain?

It can be Squarespace Domains LLC, Squarespace Domains II LLC or Tucows, and the approval step differs. A name.com guide (secondary) suggests checking the "Provider" column.

With either Squarespace company, an email titled "New domain transfer request" arrives with a "Review request" link. You have 5 days to reject; after that it is accepted. With Tucows, confirming the link starts the transfer at once; otherwise it starts after five business days.

What breaks when the domain leaves Squarespace?

Email breaks first if you do nothing. Squarespace tells you to redo MX records at the new provider, because most providers will not keep your records. A Google Workspace subscription stays billed through Squarespace until you cancel it.

Remove DNSSEC before you start. Expect no DNS edits until the end, which can take up to 15 days. WHOIS privacy, on the other hand, can stay on.

What do you do on TransferOffshore with the code?

Paste the name and its code in the transfer form: one row per domain, up to 20 rows per request. Your current nameservers are kept by default. A .com transfer costs $12.49 and adds one year (all prices). You pay from a crypto balance, with no ID. By ICANN rules, a registrar must hand over the code within 5 calendar days. It cannot hold the code back over a payment dispute (auth code guide).

Squarespace transfer questions

Does Squarespace charge a fee to transfer a domain out?

Squarespace's official transfer-away article, read on 19 October 2026, lists no fee. Third-party sites mention $20 or $75, but these claims conflict and are unverified. Ask Squarespace support if in doubt. At TransferOffshore you pay the transfer price of the extension, which adds a year on gTLDs.

Must I turn off WHOIS privacy at Squarespace?

No. Squarespace says WHOIS privacy does not need to be disabled, although some gaining registrars still ask for it. TransferOffshore only needs the name and the code. The same article warns that the registrant email may stay hidden even after you disable privacy.

Can I cancel a Squarespace transfer once it has started?

Squarespace's article says the request cannot be cancelled once the code has been sent. For names held by Squarespace Domains LLC or II, the approval email still allows a rejection within 5 days. Be sure of the move before you click "Request transfer code".
