Transfer a domain from Wix to an offshore registrar

On Wix the domain, the site and the mailbox are tied together. The code is the easy part; the site disconnects when the name leaves.

Quick answer

How do I transfer a domain from Wix?

To transfer a domain from Wix, open Domains, click the Domain Actions icon and choose Transfer away from Wix, then I Still Want to Transfer. As of October 2026, Wix emails the code to the registrant contact. Paste it into TransferOffshore. Under ICANN rules, the old registrar then has up to 5 days to answer.

How the Wix transfer-away flow runs

  1. Turn off Private Registration

Disable "Private Registration" first, so that the transfer emails reach you.

  2. Unlock the domain

The domain must be unlocked. Wix's article does not name the control, so check the domain's settings.

  3. Open Domain Actions

On the Domains page (manage.wix.com/account/domains), click the "Domain Actions" icon beside the name.

  4. Confirm three times

Choose "Transfer away from Wix", then "Transfer Domain", then "I Still Want to Transfer".

  5. Check the registrant mailbox

Wix sends the code to the domain's registrant contact email.

What happens to my Wix site and business email?

The Wix site is disconnected from the domain once it leaves. Business email stops too, unless you re-add the MX records at your new DNS host.

Plan that work for the day the transfer completes. If your aim is only to host the site elsewhere, Wix also lets you keep the domain and point it to custom nameservers.

Who in a Wix team is allowed to transfer the domain?

Only the site owner, or an Admin (Co-Owner) who also owns the payment method for the domain. Other collaborators will not see the option.

Once the transfer starts, the Whois status reads "pending transfer", and Wix says it cannot track the move after that. Follow it on the TransferOffshore side instead, under My domains.

What do you do on TransferOffshore with the code?

Paste the name and its code in the transfer form: one row per domain, up to 20 rows per request. Your current nameservers are kept by default. A .com transfer costs $12.49 and adds one year (all prices). You pay from a crypto balance, with no ID. By ICANN rules, a registrar must hand over the code within 5 calendar days. It cannot hold the code back over a payment dispute (auth code guide).

Wix transfer questions

Why did I not receive the Wix transfer email?

Check whether "Private Registration" is still on, and which address is the registrant contact. Wix sends the code there, not always to your login email. Wix advises turning Private Registration off before you start, so that transfer emails are not missed.

Do Wix free-domain vouchers block a transfer?

Wix's official article, read on 19 October 2026, mentions no voucher or free-domain hold, so we cannot confirm one. The locks it lists are 60 days after purchase, after a registrant change and after a transfer. If the request fails, ask Wix support for the exact reason.

Older guides show another Wix menu. Which one is right?

Older guides describe My Domains > Advanced > Transfer away from Wix > Send Code (secondary source). The current Wix article uses the Domain Actions icon instead. Follow the current path, since Wix updates its help article when the menus change.
