Transfer a domain from Cloudflare to an offshore registrar

Cloudflare Registrar ties every domain to Cloudflare nameservers. Leaving is easy; keeping DNS alive afterwards needs a plan.

Quick answer

How do I transfer a domain from Cloudflare?

To transfer a domain from Cloudflare, open Manage Domains > Manage > Configuration, click Unlock and copy the auth code into TransferOffshore. As of October 2026, Cloudflare approves on the fifth day if you do nothing. Its domains must use Cloudflare nameservers, so prepare DNS at the destination before you approve.

Leaving Cloudflare Registrar in five moves

  1. Open Manage Domains

In the dashboard, open "Manage Domains", find the name and click "Manage".

  2. Unlock under Configuration

Go to "Configuration", press "Unlock", then "Confirm and Unlock".

  3. Copy the generated code

Cloudflare creates the auth code once the lock is off. Lost it? Press "Regenerate", or lock and unlock again.

  4. Build the zone elsewhere

Export every record from the Cloudflare zone and recreate it at the DNS host you will use next.

  5. Approve, or wait five days

When the request reaches Cloudflare, approve it in the dashboard, or let day five pass.

Will my Cloudflare DNS keep working after the transfer?

Cloudflare's documentation does not say, so check before you approve. It states that all domains on Cloudflare Registrar use Cloudflare nameservers. It also says the domain is removed from your account when the transfer completes.

Its remove-domain page, seen in a search excerpt, says removing a domain stops Cloudflare DNS resolution. Whether that happens after a registrar change is undocumented. The safe path: set up DNS at the destination first. If you want to keep Cloudflare DNS, confirm with Cloudflare that the zone stays active.

Why can I not switch nameservers before leaving Cloudflare?

Cloudflare Registrar does not allow other nameservers. Its documentation says that to use them, you must move the domain to another registrar. The transfer is therefore the only exit from Cloudflare DNS for these names.

In the Nameservers step of our checkout, choose new nameservers instead of keeping the current ones: ours, Cloudflare's or custom servers. A transfer adds one year, which Cloudflare itself charges at cost when a domain comes in.

What do you do on TransferOffshore with the code?

Paste the name and its code in the transfer form: one row per domain, up to 20 rows per request. Your current nameservers are kept by default. A .com transfer costs $12.49 and adds one year (all prices). You pay from a crypto balance, with no ID. By ICANN rules, a registrar must hand over the code within 5 calendar days. It cannot hold the code back over a payment dispute (auth code guide).

Cloudflare transfer questions

What happens if I reject the transfer at Cloudflare?

The transfer stops and Cloudflare puts the registrar lock back, per its transfer-out guide read on 19 October 2026. You then unlock again and send a new request with the same or a regenerated code. If you take no action at all, Cloudflare approves the transfer on the fifth day.

Does Cloudflare keep billing the domain after it leaves?

No renewals follow. Cloudflare's transfer-out page says the domain is removed from your account on completion, and no future renewals are charged for it. From then on, renewals happen at TransferOffshore, at the same price as the transfer, paid from your crypto balance.

Is there a lock after moving a domain between Cloudflare accounts?

Yes, 30 days. Cloudflare's FAQ says a move between two Cloudflare accounts adds a 30-day transfer lock. A registrant change adds 60 days, unless you choose to skip that lock before accepting the change. Neither rule applies to .uk names.

Can I pay Cloudflare in crypto?

We found no crypto option on 19 October 2026. Cloudflare's FAQ says Registrar charges the account's primary payment method, so a card or similar method on file. TransferOffshore takes BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC from a prepaid balance and asks for one verified email, no ID.
